Subject:- Hole in a 1300 Radiator

This question was asked by a member:-

What can I do about the hole in my radiator ?

These replies were submitted by members:-

Following stone damage to my ST 1300 alloy radiator, causing severe coolant leak, I successfully had the rad’ repaired at minimal cost.
It appears welding the thin alloy tube profiles is nigh impossible, but high temperature adhesive, especially developed for such repairs, is the answer. Didn’t much like the sound of “glueing” up the hole but I was assured it is reliable. David Silver Spares could do me a new rad’ , then, at £278.00 plus vat! (Ouch!)
I was lucky to have an alloy rad’ repairer on my doorstep, Autocool Radiators, Unit 36 Raylor Centre, James Street, York. 01904 438500. I’m sure you will find a similar repairer in your area. The rad’ repair man assured me he had repaired around thirty alloy bike rads using the adhesive and pointed to a bike dealer nearby ( Stuart Rafferty Motorcycles, York ) who would testify of the reliability of the repair. At £20.00. plus vat, for the repair what had I to lose.
The repair looked good and on reassembly saw the addition of a home made rad’ guard (Bike Quip now do a properly manufactured one).
3 years on and several thousand miles since the repair, everything is okay.
Take care, Brian Outhwaite

1. Hi Len.
I made the mistake of fitting Motad (I think they were called) SS pipes to my original Honda Silencers. Because they didn’t quite line up, it put strain on the joint and when I was on hols in France, the silencer snapped off (it was probably somewhere near ready to be replaced anyway), and my only quick option was another Honda Silencer. Within a couple years the ss pipes were corroded, so I then had to replace them and the garage said that the Honda pipes, even though they are not ss, were a much better, thicker material, as are the silencers. I think they are probably right, and the fact they are ss doesn’t seem to help!
So my humble advice is what ever you decide to do, don’t mix one make of pipe with another make of silencer, and if you can afford it, buy the Honda system (even though it is a rip-off price), because they do seem to last longer. You will have to weigh-up the savings from a cheaper system with the length of time they will last/cost of re-fitting another new system.
But then I’m no expert!
Pete

2. Hi Len
I fitted a stainless system to my ST1100 in August. I had excellent service from mad4bikes, the price was competitive, delivery excellent and advice competent.
I needed downpipes and collector
exhaust clamps
exhaust gaskets
Well worth a look on t'interwebb!!
Good luck

3. Hi Len
In my opinion the best to go for in respect of looks and fit and cost is the polished stainless system from Motad. For the full system it will cost around £500. Only drawback is the silencers have to be moved to remove the rear wheel.
Look on ebay, they are always advertised.

I took mine down to Motad at Walsall who are the manufacturers of stainless steel systems. It was £587 (18 months ago) for a full system and they fitted it for free (about 4 hours work). I think it depends how busy they are as to wether they will fit it or not. A friend of mine bought his at that price but had to fit it himself. You can find them on the internet.
Mention NPR and you may get a slightly better price. For the same system my local honda dealer were looking for about £1100!! supply and fit.

5. Hi Len
I have had acopy of your e-mail from NPR.
I bought a Pan a couple of years ago & it had a stainless Motad full system fitted. The quality seems good & it fits very well.
Regarding price - David Silver Spares in their 2007 catalogue (last one I had) lists the full system for £450.00 + VAT & carriage. They are also distributors for BSM exhausts.
Their contacts : Phone 01728 833020. Web davidsilverspares.co.uk; email sales@davidsilverspares.co.uk
If you don't live too far away from St.Helens,Merseyside & you would like a look, please let me know.
Hope this is some help.

6. Hi Len,
Your query has been passed on to the Pan Clan East Midlands by Wendy Threlkeld, so here is our experience:
We have a 1991 1100, which has been fitted with a Motad system for some years (before we bought the bike). The system is as quiet as the original, and looks good in the "black chrome" finish. It is a direct copy of the original, which means that you can buy bits of it, rather than a complete system, and still have a working bike. I thoroughly recommend it.
Hope you're successful in your search.
Regards,
Paul Horner

7. Hi Len
Not sure which model you are looking at, but assume 1100.
I had stainless up to the collector. The silencers rotted out when I was in Scotland in the summer.
Money was a big consideration, and I found a couple of stainless silencers at Sandy Bike Spares for around £250
http://www.sandybikespares.co.uk/
They seem to be ok. Only issue is that I have to move the left hand one when I want to take the rear wheel off. (they don’t have the cut out bit that allows you to withdraw the axle bolt.
If you are in the N Yorks area, you are welcome to have a look at the ones I bought.
Hope this helps
Steve
